Join the PTO Team!
|
|
School has begun, and we need your support to
make this another great year of learning for our
children! We encourage every family to join the PTO
Team for the 2006-2007 school year.
The level of quality education that Laurel and Encinal
families have come to expect is a direct result of this
annual fund raising drive. Look at our list of PTO Accomplishments to see what we were
able to do last year, thanks to the generous support
of our PTO Members.
Our theme this year is Building a Winning Team,
which describes the PTO’s ultimate goal — to help
our schools provide an all-star educational
experience for our kids.
Please print out the membership form and decide
today how strong your support for learning can be!

able to begin hot lunch on September 12 (the first

Thursdays for first and second graders. For detailed
instructions and menu choices, see the
Hot Lunch Flyer. Please note that
everyone must re-register this year. If you do not
receive your password email within 2 hours of setup,
check whether your spam blocker is filtering it out.
If you wish to order an extra entree, contact Dennis
Walker at 324-2049 before ordering. If you are
having trouble getting your password or if you need
manual ordering instructions, contact Dennis Walker
at 324-2049 or Remona Murray at 327-2806 .

Safety To and From School
|
This year’s enrollment at Laurel is a record at nearly
500! That means more traffic than EVER around our
school. However you choose to come to school, here
are a few safety tips:
Walking
Be sure to cross at crosswalks whenever possible.
Walk on the right side of the road; with the flow of
traffic, never against it.
Biking
Parents riding with their children should ride to the
side or directly behind their children, not in front of
them. Obey all the same rules of the road as would
a car; stop signs, right of ways and hand signals for
turning. Please remember to walk your bikes through
crosswalks and on campus.
Cars
Please use turn signals so other drivers, walkers,
bikers and our crossing guard, know where you’re
going next. Please share the road with walkers and
bikers. Around our school there are few sidewalks
and narrow streets, which means walkers and bikers
may be in the roadway with you. Maintain a safe
distance as you pass them – usually at least 5ft.
For Everyone
Leaving just 5 or 10 minutes before you HAVE to
helps stagger the arriving traffic at Laurel, and
guarantees everyone will arrive more relaxed and
ready to begin their day. Try it and feel the
difference!!

Lunchtime Composting
|
Eco Squirrel here to welcome you back to our
beautiful school and to tell you that composting at
lunch for 1st and 2nd graders starts Tuesday,
September 12. Everything in the three hot lunches
can be put into the large brown container next to
the trash container at lunchtime. Even our cutlery
is compostable - it's made from corn!
For those of you bringing your lunch from home,
please try to pack a lunch that makes as little waste
as possible and uses reusable containers. Waxed
paper bags are good too because you can compost
them. All of the waste that goes into the brown
containers gets hauled away to Allied Waste where
they turn it into very rich dirt!
Compost Trash
milk cartons juice boxes
waxed paper plastic bags
paper plates & bags
all food
Look for our friendly Eco volunteers who will help you
to figure out where to put what on Tuesdays,
Wednesdays and Thursdays, the first month of hot
lunch.
If we all work together, we can help our school and
our planet be a little greener!
