Suggestion Box
If you would like to let the PTO know about your ideas to make our great school even better, use the Suggestion Box in the office OR send ideas to suggestion_box(at)laurelpto.org. Suggestions are reviewed at each PTO Executive Board meeting. The suggestion box is a much more effective way to get results than taking your concerns to individual board members, and you can remain anonymous if you choose.
Any suggestion that involves school operations (school programs, safety issues, the school grounds, etc.) should be sent directly to the Principal's office for immediate attention.

Book Fair Donations
East Palo Alto Charter School (EPACS) is a K-8 charter school in the low-income Ravenswood School District. The national average of books to students is 22:1 while at EPACS the ratio is 4:1 and, most books are outdated or in very poor condition. By purchasing and donating books to EPACS, Laurel and Encinal families are helping kids in our neighboring community to expand their depth of knowledge and, to experience the joy, excitement and promise of reading! Look for EPACS book 'wish list' at the book fair, beginning October 9. If you have any questions about donating, please contact Joanne Andrew at joandrew13(at)yahoo.com.

    Costume Drive

BOO!!! Now that we have your attention....The Laurel and Encinal PTO Caring and Sharing Committees' first event of the 2006-2007 school year is collecting new and gently-used children's costumes and accessories (hats, boas, scarves, etc.). Bring costumes to the Caring and Sharing Giving Boxes at Encinal and Laurel October 9-20. Costumes are available to anyone who is interested and will be distributed at lunch time beginning October 18 (parents are welcome to come and help). This is an opportunity to recycle costumes, share with those who may need a costume or find something that will be perfect for your child! If you have any questions, please contact Peckie Peters at 321-2423 or peckye(at)comcast.net.

    Eco Squirrel

Eco Squirrel here again to tell you that the Zero Waste Lunch is going well! Students are doing a great job of sorting their trash from their compostables. We are consistently generating at least three times as much compost as trash at lunchtime so keep up the good work! Parents, you can help by packing your child's lunch in reusable containers whenever possible. This way, you can also see what they are eating from what they bring home.

Did you know that juice boxes are not recyclable or compostable? They have too many layers so they have to be thrown away. An alternative is to buy the Rubbermaid reusable juice boxes from the grocery store. See you next week!
