Laurel PTO Notes

Kindergarten Half Day
On October 31, all kindergarteners will attend school from 8:10 a.m. to 12:10 p.m. This will allow all students to participate in the Halloween Parade at 8:30 a.m.

Food Drive
The Laurel/Encinal Caring and Sharing Thanksgiving Food Drive begins November 6 and runs through November 17. Please start thinking about purchasing grocery store gift cards, extra canned good items, basic turkey day foods, and other essentials, or donate directly to the food drive
online. If you would like to help with the food drive or if you have questions, please contact: Joanne Andrew at joandrew13(at)yahoo.com, Susan MacLeod at macleod_family(at)comcast.net) or Peckie Peters at peckye(at)comcast.net.

Speaker: Lunch Lessons
Wednesday, November 8, 7 p.m.

    Halloween

    • Tuesday, October 31, 8:30 a.m.
    • Laurel Second Grade Field
Bring your kids to school on Tuesday already dressed in costume, then stay for the parade! Don't forget your camera for some great “Kodak” moments. Children will follow along the pathways (great viewing spots!) from their classrooms to the second grade field, and then will return to their own playgrounds for a grade-level parade.

Please send a change of clothes for your children, as they will not wear their costumes the entire day. Check your classroom communications to find out when each party will be held. All Kindergarteners will attend school from 8:10 a.m. until 12:10. p.m.

Also, please remember that NO weapons of any kind are allowed at school, including swords or other inappropriate costume props. Please use your best judgment, and ask your teacher if you have questions.

The Reading Rainforest Was a Wild Success!

The 2006 Book Fair raised over $5600 for each PTO from new, used and author donated books, purchased over 820 books for Encinal and Laurel teachers, and donated over $1400 in books to the East Palo Alto Charter School. The Book Fair Committee would like to thank everyone who made the Book Fair so successful:

To all our wonderful volunteers -- we couldn't have done it without you! Check out our attached thank you flyer.

To our very special guest readers, Mrs. Conn, Mrs. Wong and Mrs. Jacobson -- it was a great treat to see you again! To Jane Kellam, Maryanne Fernandez and the Show Biz Dancers -- what a fun party! To Joanne Andrew for Caring and Sharing -- we really appreciated the chance to help kids in our community. Finally, to our great Laurel and Encinal families and friends for your support of our kids, teachers and our larger community!

    Eco Squirrel

Eco Squirrel here and I just checked in on how the first and second graders are doing with composting: in one word - FANTASTIC! Even without parent volunteers they are doing a wonderful job of sorting their trash from their compostables. It would help me if you would ask your child about lunchtime composting: how does it work? Can you compost food? (yes) Where does the hot lunch go?(all compostable) What can't go into the compost? (plastic forks, yoghurt containers, plastic bags, juice boxes, aluminum foil) We do not have recycling cans out at lunch for students - it is too confusing to have to sort to one more can. Please send drinks in reusable containers whenever possible. Milk cartons are compostable. Thanks to you parents for helping us cut down on the trash we generate at Laurel!

MPAEF - Donation Day is November 7

Are You Ready For Donation Day?

By now you must have received an envelope in the mail from the MPAEF – now you just have to open it! With MPAEF Donation Day just two weeks away, it is time to fill out those remit envelopes and do your part to help us reach $2 million, granting the District $900 per student. Donation Day is an opportunity for the entire community to get out and give at any level. Giving on-line at www.mpaef.org/donations counts too.

Remember – November 7 is Donation Day! Our 2200+ students count on the MPAEF and the MPAEF counts on you!

Thank You - Caring and Sharing

A HUGE thank you to our generous Encinal and Laurel families for the 'caring and sharing' shown to East Palo Alto Charter School. We had over $1300 dollars worth of hardback books purchased at the bookfair and donated to EPACS' library. They were so overwhelmed by all the wonderful books and would like you all to know what a difference you have made for the kids at EPACS. Thanks also to the book fair organizers for making donating to EPACS so easy!
