Please save the date for our the Spring General Meeting of the PTO.  We will be voting in next year's board and will host Superindendant Ken Ranella, who will discuss the recently released strategic plan for the district.
More Car Burglaries
Two more car break-ins were reported on Tuesday, this time on Edge Road at Lowery. Please do not leave your purse or any other valuables in your car when you park at or near Laurel School (including in our parking lot).  Our cars are clearly being targeted by thieves, and the best way to stop them is to make sure there is nothing for them to steal.
Laurel Open House and Fine Arts Festival

Distinguished School Award Celebration - Please Come!

Laurel students will celebrate their Distinguished School Award with songs and popcorn.  Parents, join us if you can! Everyone should show their school spirit by wearing the Laurel school colors - royal blue and white!
The Klutz Store's "Give-It-All-Away Day"

The Klutz Store in Palo Alto will give away 101% of your purchase on this day to the Laurel-Encinal PTO. See the attached flyer for more information.
Caring and Sharing School Supplies Drive
Mark your calendars for the Caring and Sharing School Supplies Drive benefiting Laurel and Encinal Students. Supplies such as backpacks, markers, paper, and pencils will be collected between April 28 and May 10 and distributed to Laurel and Encinal families in the fall. Watch for more details next week. Laurel/Encinal Pancake Breakfast

The entire family will enjoy lip-smacking pancakes, gourmet bacon, delicious fruit, and hot/cold beverages -- all happily prepared by volunteers.

Donate Your Used Books
Spring is here and it's the perfect time to clean out your closets and rid your house of those unwanted books.  We would like to get a jump on collecting the used books for the 2008 Encinal/Laurel Book Fair and are looking for used books that are in good shape.  Please no board books, magazines, coloring books, text books, or books in really bad shape.

Drop off your book donations in the Donation Bin outside the Encinal and Laurel school offices the week of April 21, 2008.  For more information regarding donating used books, please contact Susan Tanner at mstanner(at)bluetopazsolutions.com.
District Music Events
Encinal Spring Concert

All 4th and 5th graders will be performing.  Bring the family, a neighbor and a friend.  The concert will last approximately one hour.

Come hear our wonderful Jazz Band, the 6th and 7/8 orchestras (with harp and guitar!).

Kepler's Day

  • beginning at 9 a.m.

All of the district's instrumental musicians will be performing in front of Kepler's Book Store in downtown Menlo Park.  Please go to the Hillview Music department website at www.mpcsd.org/music for a list of performance times.  Kepler's Day ends with performances by the acclaimed M-A Jazz Band at approximately 1:30 p.m.  Come spend some time enjoying the talents of our musical children.

Hillview Band Performs at AT&T Park
On Monday, June 16, the Hillview Hawk Band will be combining with the La Entrada Leopards to perform the national Anthem for the inter-league game between the Detroit Tigers and the SF Giants. There will be over 100 musicians performing on the field.  Welcome the start of summer with a game and help to support Hillview's music program.  There is also a great raffle!  Prizes include: 4 Owners Box seats, the Play Ball kid, onfield visits during battling practice and more!  Ticket forms and information about the game can be found at www.mpcsd.org/music.
Accepting Our Differences Week at Encinal - Volunteers Needed
Accepting Our Differences Week is Coming to Encinal September 29 through October 3, 2008!  If you will have a child at Encinal next year, we need your help in the classroom for 30-60 minutes one time during this week. We will also ask you come to a 30-minute tutorial the week before.

This week is a program about learning our differences. It is a fun-filled week of activities where we try to help students understand that we are all different and  special in some way. We explore acceptance, inclusion, teasing, and bullying. There will be in-class activities for all grades, speakers for parents and more! Contact: dbtuchman(at)hotmail.com or 906-4070.

TV Land Casting Call.  It's not easy to create TV Land.  Our producers, directors, and talent scouts need your help and want to hear from you.  We've got VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES before, during, and after the event with lots of variety in terms of time required and location (e.g., at home or at Menlo College).  There is something for everyone!  For example, if you want to help set up, decorate, serve drinks, register guests, close the silent auction, or clean up, let us know, we've got a role for you.  Just contact Lauren Calhoon at calhoon120(at)sbcglobal.net or 566-1244 with a head shot and resume (kidding) and she will help you find the right job.
 
Can't make it to the MPAEF Auction?  You can still bid for most items online!  The Golden Girls (and boys) of the district are all invited to bid online for auction items!  Blanche's social calendar is already full; Sophia doesn't feel well and can't make the party; but even Rose knows that everyone can bid for items online, even if they're not going to the auction!  Online browsing is available NOW and bidding is available at
www.mpaef.org/tvland starting April 28. Online bidding closes May 15, two days before the auction night party.  Most silent auction items are available for online bidding (all except parties, getaways, and sports). Log on, browse the catalog, and make a bid.  And don't forget to purchase raffle tickets for a chance to win a gorgeous golden jade and diamond ring - raffle tickets were included in your auction invitation, and more are available in the school offices.  Don't miss this golden opportunity!

Menlo Park Kite Day

The City of Menlo Park Community Services Department will be hosting the 20th Annual Kite Day at Bayfront Park. Come celebrate National Kite Month and fly a kite with your fellow community members. For $5 you will receive a kite, hotdog, and soda. All ages are welcome. For more information about the event, please click here.

GreenSTART Competition Deadline Extended

Due to differing spring break schedules, Atherton's GreenSTART program is accepting new entrants for the student environmental competition through April 25.  Please email your Project Registration Form to events(at)athertongreen.net.  The Project Summary Form will be due by April 30 and students will need to prepare a display on what their project is about and be able to attend the GreenSTART Fair on May 4.  More information is available at the GreenSTART web site at: www.athertongreen.net, click on the GreenSTART link.

Don't forget the GreenSTART Fair on May 4. We will have a seedling plant sale, hosted by Encinal's Green Thumb club, an e-Waste collection, crafts, fun and entertainment for kids, the first non-virtual Freecycle Exchange (drop off good stuff to give away, pick up good stuff that you can use), organic baked goods from local residents, and music by the Banana Slug String Band. 

Kepler's Family Story Time

Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Training -  FREE!
Here is your opportunity to become a trained member of "CERT", the Menlo Park Fire District Community Preparedness Program.  Participants in this 15-hour series of classes will learn how to develop neighborhood teams, cross-trained in basic emergency skills.  Each class emphasizes a set of skills that will be practiced at a hands-on drill at the last class. All classes will be held at the Menlo Park City Council Chambers, 701 Laurel Street, Wednesdays from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m., April 16 through May 21.  Subjects include: Earthquake Awareness and Preparedness, Fire Safety, Disaster Medical, Light Search and Rescue, Team Organization and Management.  For more information about CERT classes, please call 688-8415 or email carolp(at)menlofire.org.

Earth Day at Gamble Garden

SOLO Water Polo - Summer Session
SOLO Water Polo has a year round program for Youth athletes boys and girls ages 7 to 14 years old.  SOLO Water Polo is run by Coach Bega who is also the head Menlo Atherton Bears Boys coach (Defending CIF-CCS 2007 Champions) and San Jose State University Women's Assistant coach.  Come out learn the sport of water polo and great techniques for balance in the water for young athletes.  The Summer Session runss from Monday, June 16, to Saturday, August 2, at Menlo Atherton Spieker Pool.  You can sign up online and check details of the summer program at www.soloaquatics.com.  Contact: Coach Bega - jmbega(at)gmail.com  or 892-0771.
