Super Heroes Rule!
Box Tops LogoThank you to all the families who donated so generously to the PTO Membership Drive.  Overall, 80% of our kids joined the PTO.  As a result of our Super Hero parents' generosity, we raised 93% of our goal. Through these donations your kids, the staff and our community will benefit from the many enrichment programs offered by our PTOs.

By now you should have received a letter (please save this as a record  of your contribution for your 2008 tax filing) and a coin pouch for  each of your Laurel/Encinal children.  If you have not received these,  please contact Darcy Leschly at dleschly(at)comcast.net.

If you haven't joined the PTO, it's never too late!  Click here for the Membership flyer.
Kids Art Fundraiser Deadline
All classes at Laurel have had a chance to work on pieces for the Kids Art Fundraiser.  By now your child should have brought home a packet that includes your child's artwork, along with a price list and brochure from Original Works. These items make beautiful and unique holiday gifts, while providing a terrific fundraising opportunity for our PTO!

All orders must be turned in by Tuesday, October 7 - please return them to your child's classroom. Please make checks payable to Laurel PTO.

You can find additional paper and order forms in the community room. Please note that the paper is of a smaller size than standard - 8 " x 10.5". If you have any questions, please contact Mary Picciotto at 322-4609 or marypicciotto(at)pacbell.net.
Kid Chow Now Offered to Kinder Families
We're happy to announce that Kindergarten families may start participating in the Kid Chow cold bag lunch program immediately, with the first date of lunch service being Monday, October 13.  The order deadline for the week of October 13 is this Sunday, October 5.

Families new to the Kid Chow program will need to create an account before placing their first order.  Lunches are available five days a week and you can choose which days you would like to order.  Lunches are delivered to each arbor before 12noon - in time for AM kinders to take their lunch to their after-school programs!

Please consider volunteering if you decide to participate in the Kid Chow program; volunteers are the backbone of the program's success.  Go to the Kid Chow volunteer sign up page to pick dates that work for you.

Questions?  Please contact Rebecca Wang at rebs1(at)aol.com.
Encinal and Laurel Parent Education Night
  • What is Differentiated Instruction and How Does It Work?
  • Monday, October 6, 2008
  • 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
  • Encinal Library
Our children experience the joys and challenges they face as individuals every day.  These differences can affect the way they learn in several ways.  That's where the District's focus on differentiated instruction can help.  Differentiated Instruction (DI) is all about working with different learning styles, different levels of understanding, and different interests, all within the context of one group of students.  How can one teacher possibly engage and help a broad spectrum of children progress?  Lane Narvaez, co-author of the book Differentiated School: Making Revolutionary Changes in Teaching and Learning and DI coach for Laurel and Encinal, will share her insights with parents.
Business Alliances
