All children who walk or bike that day will receive a small reward. Additionally, there is a Bike Rodeo later that same afternoon! Benefits of walking or cycling include getting exercise, decreasing air pollution, reducing congestion around the school, and learning pedestrian/biking skills. | Getting to School...Safely |
Next Wednesday, October 7th, is the National Walk & Bike to School Day as well as the Book Fair Bike Rodeo at Laurel. As a result, there may be many more students walking or bicycling to school that day. In order for everyone to enjoy themselves and stay safe, please keep in mind the following points: Drivers
Please slow to below the speed limit when passing walkers and bikers. Maintain a distance of at least 15 feet when following, and 6 feet when passing. After parking, look over your shoulder and into your side view mirror to ensure you will not open your door into a walker or biker. Bicyclists
Always ride with the flow of traffic - never against it. If using a crosswalk, dismount and walk your bike. Use hand signals to communicate turning and stopping to drivers behind you. Officials suggest riding in a single file line. Stop at all stop signs and follow the rules of the road Walkers
Always walk against the flow of traffic to maintain maximum visibility. Be sure you are seen by drivers, by making clear eye contact, before crossing a street. Walk within the bike/walking lane, where they exist, whenever possible. Bus
If taking the BUS to school, thank you! This has greatly helped reduce car traffic and crowding during drop-off time.
